| James Compton 2 was a lumberman and expert pilot on the Delaware river. As a young man, he moved to Delhi, in Delaware County, New York where he married Clarissa Cleveland, and there reared his family. In 1816 he moved from Delhi to Ulysses, Tompkins County, New York, familiarly known as "between the lakes," resided there about two years, and in 1818 moved to Old Liecester, Livingston County, New York where he stayed for about a year. In 1819 he moved to a nearby locality known as "Smoky Hollow," where he remained for three years. From there he moved to Moscow, Livingston County, New York and lived there one year. In 1823 he moved onto the Correll farm above Moscow, where he stayed three years. In the fall of 1826 he bought from the Connecticut Land Company a farm of 200 acres, situated 1.5 miles north of Moscow. No money, only an article, was required in this purchase and fortunate it was, for he was poor. The farm proved to be a valuable one, for he and his sons had paid for it by 1834 from its earnings, and in that year he sold it for from $30 to $33 per acre, thus giving them between $6,000 and $7,000 for their work of about eight years. He died at Moscow, Feb. 9, 1835. By the year 1836, his children had settled in Washington Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania, except Fanny (Compton) Wicker, who, with her husband, had moved to Vermont, and Sophia (Compton) Densmore, who had settled in Woodcock Township, Crawford County, Pennsylvania, seven miles from Meadville. He was a skillful river pilot and managed gangs of lumbermen, who took lumber on rafts down the Delaware River to Philadelphia. He always brought home books, collecting quite a library. Lived in Delaware County to 1814, lumbering in Tompkins County, New York, Bristol and Moscow, Livingston, New York to 1816; afterward of Leicester, farming. [Moses.ged] |
