| Sophia Compton 3, m Sun. Mar. 7, 1819, at Moscow, N. Y., Joel Densmore, son of Zebediah Densmore and Elizabeth (Todd) Densmore of Pittsfield, Vt. In Mar. 1869 they celebrated their golden wedding at Erie, Pa. She died at Meadville, Pa. Tues. Jan. 2, 1877. Joel Densmore was born at Alstead, N. H. Sun. Sept. 21, 1794. His father (Zebediah) served as a soldier in the Revolutionarv war, also in the war of 1812, and in the latter, Joel Densmore, on his eighteenth birthday, enlisted as a drummer. In 1813 his regiment was sent to Sacketts Harbor, and in the fall of that year they were ordered down the St. Lawrence river to French Mills, their knapsacks having been transported by boat to that point, and here he found that his was missing. Unable to procure additional clothing, without leave, he started for Pittsfield, where his mother lived, crossing Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains enroute. It required three months time for his sister to weave and make his clothing, and he then returned to his regiment, where he was court martialed and sentenced to be shot for desertion. The same court recommended mercy, and his sentence was commuted to three months additional service. In the winter of 1818 he chopped wood on the present site of Rochester N. Y. He went to Moscow N. Y. and married Sophia Compton in the spriruz of 1819 and that same spring she tapped the trees and made 100 pounds of maple sugar. They removed to Cathridge Falls N. Y. in 1822 and to Rochester in 1823. and to Good Hope Can. in 1826 where he was engaged to build a pail factory, the first one in Canada for making wooden pails by machinery. Late in the fall of the same year they returned to Rochester where they remained until 1834. While in Rochester, on general training days, he and his son James were in demand as snare drummers, he was paid $4 and James, then twelve years of age, was paid $2 per day. In the spring of 1834 they moved to Moscow and in the fall of 1835 to Washington Tp. Erie Co. Pa., to the farm where Putnam Jeffords now lives, and to Blooming Valley, Crawford Co. Pa. Jan. 1, 1836. Joel Densmore was a mechanic, inventor and millwright of more than ordinary ability. A lathe for turning wooden bowls is of his invention and is in use' at the present day. It was never patented. He attended school but six weeks in childhood, was therefore self educated and was so pr.oficient in mathematics after attaining manhood that he could calculate an eclipse. He had an unusually sweet, musical voice in singing and often sung beautiful melodies in his sleep, some of these songs he was unable to repeat when awake. He d at Erie, Pa. Wed. Sept. 8, 1875. |
