| John Compton 3, m in the spring of 1826 at Moscow, N. Y. Eliza Ensign, daughter of Samuel and Anna (Root) Ensign, b Tues, Aug. 8, 1809. Removed from Moscow, N. Y. in Oct. 1836 to Washington Twp. Erie county, Pa. and settled first on what was then known as the Green farm in a log house where Henry Hitt afterward built the frame dwelling now the parsonage at McLane, Pa. While at the Green farm he erected a log house one-half mile east on the farm now owned by the Densmores and removed there March 4, 1840. The ruins of this house are now (1901) still standing. On this farm from 1836 to 1848 he was engaged in distilling, kept a country store, an ashery for the manufacture of saleratus, also cultivated the farm. In 1848 he removed to Erie where he engaged in distilling and was also a member of the firm of Compton & Haverstick, dealers in dry goods on Cheapside, French street, but a short distance from the site of the present Reed House. He bought live acres of land on the "Buffalo Road" which was then in the country, and built thereon, near John Ryan's brick frame house. This land, now on what is known as E. 18th street, is built up solidly with residences. In 1851 he removed from the "Buffalo Road" back to the old farm in Washington Twp., purchased the David Wells farm adjoining, now (1901) owned by Vandyke, and he removed there in 1852. From that time until 1860 he was engaged with his brother, Josiah Johnson Compton, in the manufacture of lumber, shovel handles and wooden bowels, also kept a stock of general merchandise in the building where Charles Crandall still carries on the same business at McLane, then known as Well's Corners. The postoffice derived its present name of McLane in 1865 in honor of Col. John W. McLane of the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers, a resident of the county, and who was killed at the battle of Gaines Mills in July 1862. In the winter of 1859-60 he removed to Kingsville, Ohio, to erect a grist mill with his son-in-law, Gabriel Huff, at the North Ridge, near Kingsville, Station on the L. S. & M. S. R. R. but returned in August, 1860, to the Wells Farm in Erie county, Pa. In 1862 he removed to Erie and engaged in refining petroleum, also the manufacture of mowing machines. Removed back to McLane in 1864, and engaged in the manufacture of lumber with his nephew, Lee Ensign, and again kept store in the old store building before mentioned, and here Thurs. Nov. 3, 1864. Eliza (Ensign) Compton died. She was buried in the graveyard a short distance west of Mclane. Several years later her remains were removed to the Erie cemetery at Erie, Pa. March 26, 1870, John Compton 3, married Ophelia Webster who was b at Cussewago, Crawford county, Pa. Wed. Apr. 26, 1837, daughter of Sanford Webster and Julia Ann (Dawley) Webster. He removed again to Erie in 1873, and died there on May 16 of that year and is buried in the Erie cemetery. Ophelia (Webster) Compton now (1901) resides at Erie, Pa. |
