| In 1885 Nebraska state census, a servant named Victoria Owens, age 16, is living with Walter and Hannah Campbell Compton. Walter's mother, Betsy, is also living with them, as is Clarance, who is identified as a sister, and is probably Clarissa based on the age. There is an adopted child named Lizzie Decker, age 10, living there as well, according to the census. A newspaper article in The Columbus Journal on 14 Aug 1889 reports Lizzie Decker's death on 9 Aug, and lists her as being adopted as a child by Clarissa Compton. "Died, August 9th, of typhoid fever after an illness of two weeks, Lizzie Decker, aged 15 years. She was adopted when a small child by Carissa Compton, and has remained with her ever since. She was a niece of Mrs. Jacob Schram, and has many friends to mourn her loss. The services were held at the Congregational church Saturday, at 3 o'clock p.m." |
